Actually, a mahjong set can have...Hello Anonymous,<br /><br />Actually, a mahjong set can have any number of extra tiles to serve the purpose of the players.<br /><br />A typical variant like Hong Kong Style may use just eight flowers (two sets of four flowers).<br /><br />'Standard' Singapore Style uses eight flowers and four animals, no more no less.<br /><br />However, if you want to play with house rules, you can add more flowers for an added dose of luck and extra ease in getting doubles (because more flowers in the wall means more chances in getting a useful flower).<br /><br />If you are learning/playing variants (say one of the Malaysian ones) that use jokers, then the jokers are necessary for the game. Otherwise, the use of jokers in Singapore Style is considered, again, house rules and thus not 'standard'. first of all thoroughly enjoying re...Hello there, <br /><br />first of all thoroughly enjoying reading your blog and as a beginner (trying to learn Singaporean mah-jong)I look foreward to all the content being published. <br /><br />I have a quick query, I have a mah- jong set from singapore (travel set to the tiles are tiny which I quite like) it has two sets of jokers(8 in all, 4 face, 4 chinese symbol) it also has 16 flowers (4 sets of 4) is this the normal make up of a set? and if not is there any reason or variation in the game to allow for 8 jokers and 16 flowers Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
